How To Deal With Adult Cerebral Palsy

Having cerebral palsy is a hard thing to live with. I personally do not have this disorder, but I grew up with a friend that suffered from it. I remember playing together like I would with any other kid on my block. It was not until a few years later that the cerebral palsy really started to affect him and he allowed it to affect him the way that it did. He let it beat him, he gave up on himself and didn't want to do anything, and allowed his muscles to begin to weaken. There were too many times for me to count, that I would go over to his house and try to get him to come out, but he just wanted to watch the television and be mad at the world. It's understandable to a point, and I don't know what it's like to live with cerebral palsy, as he would constantly say to me over and over. But he had so many people supporting him and willing to help him in any way that they possible could. And that's not the case for everyone. Needless to say his muscles began to weaken so much that he was forced to be in a wheel chair, and then he had to use an electric wheelchair and then an electric wheel chair that he controlled with his mouth. It was unfortunate that he allowed the cerebral palsy to take over his life. I am not saying that it's all his fault, but he could have helped himself if he just went to physical therapy. I don't understand that he knew that there were treatments that were available to help to prevent him from being bound to a wheel chair before he even turned 18 years old, but ignored all of it because he was angry. Now as an adult with cerebral palsy he is unable to do anything on his own and relies solely on the help of his family and friends.

There are many disadvantages to having cerebral palsy and the biggest disadvantage is allowing it to rule your life before you have even lived it. I have learned many things about cerebral palsy and watched the effects it has on the adult with cerebral palsy and the family of the person. I learned that it can be just another hurdle to jump over or it can become you.
