What Is Ataxic Cerebral Palsy?Ataxic cerebral palsy is when you have low muscle tone and poor coordination of movements, it is caused by damage to your cerebellum. The cerebellum is the main control for balance and coordination. So when you suffer from ataxic cerebral palsy it will affect your limbs and the trunk. This form of cerebral palsy is rare, it affects 5 - 10 percent of children diagnosed with cerebral palsy. There are many different affects of this type of cerebral palsy and they will affect you in several ways. Some will walk with a wide stance, others will have an unsteady and shaky walk, and other's may suffer from tremors. A wide based walk is due to the poor balance, so you need to walk with your feet apart so you can balance yourself out. The unsteady and shakiness is due to the low muscle tone so your body will automatically attempt to balance it's self out and this results in the shakiness. Ataxic cerebral palsy is caused from the same reasons that all of the different types of cerebral palsy is caused by - Infections, fetal alcohol syndrome, cigarette smoking, genetic factors, Rh and jaundice and etc… Unfortunately there is no cure for any type of cerebral palsy, but there are many treatments that are available that will help reduce the effects of the disease. A treatment for the tremors in ataxic cerebral palsy are treated with two different types of drugs, primidone and benzodiazepine, and they can help to reduce the tremors. They will not completely cure them, but it will reduce them. These drugs are just one of the available treatments for this form of cerebral palsy. There are many other types of treatments for ataxic cerebral palsy symptoms and some will help individuals more than others, so you will need to try different treatments so you can find the most effective method for you to achieve some sort of independence. The doctor's will monitor and evaluate your to determine which treatment will be the best for you. There are many different types of treatments for most of your symptoms, and some you may agree with and others you may not. But it is important that you try to find one that works well for you, but it may take some time. It's unfortunate that things take time and your patience is probably worn very thin already, and it's completely understandable.
