Cerebral Palsy Kids

Cerebral palsy affects thousands of babies and kids every single year. This is a condition that causes weakness in the muscles and causes the inability to move or position his or her body. A kid with cerebral palsy has trouble controlling his or her muscles in the arms, hands, upper body or legs.

Cerebral palsy has three different types, spastic, athetoid, and ataxic. Spastic is the most common and it is when the person can not relax the muscles. Athetoid will cause a person to have no control of the muscles in the body. Ataxic will affect the balance and coordination of the person. Every person with some type of cerebral palsy is affected differently, some will have a mild case and others will be more severe.

Unfortunately there is no exact cause of cerebral palsy, but it is thought that there was some sort of injury to the brain during or after birth. There is a lot of research being done to understand how to prevent this, because once the injury occurs to the brain there is no reversing it, meaning there is no cure for cerebral palsy. But there are ways to treat kids with cerebral palsy.

A team of doctors will evaluate your kid and determine which type of therapy will be best for your child. These doctors will specialize in treating kids with problems of the brain, nerves, or muscles. They will include a pediatric neurologist, pediatric orthopedist, developmental pediatrician, and pediatric physiatrist. They will each run their own types of special test, such as x-rays and blood test. Cerebral palsy kids need to go through therapy in order to learn how to do the many things that we take for granted, such as walking, sitting, swallowing, and using their hands. This will help them prepare for school as well.

There is no reason that a kid with cerebral palsy cannot go to school like any other kid, and make friends and do what the other kids are doing. They are still kids only with a bigger challenge in their life that most children never have to deal with. Cerebral palsy kids will have the ability through therapy to use a computer, ride a bike and do various things that you may have believed that they would never be able to do. This is possible in some cases because of the many available equipment that will aid in many of their activities, such as wheelchairs, walkers, and even communication devices.
